Christ is the firstborn of the dead, the first-fruits of a new humanity, resurrected in new form. As our eldest brother (Hebrews 2:11), He is heir of all things.

(The importance of the firstborn is also connected to Passover. At the Exodus, the firstborn child of the Hebrews was "passed over." He was saved from death by the sacrifice of a lamb.)
